Changing the world, one book at a time.

At Penguin Random House Canada, we are a team of dedicated, book-loving professionals who discover, shape, and share content that nurtures thoughts, dreams, and conversations around the globe — ensuring that new and established voices are heard.

We’re looking for a Junior Designer to join our Design Team on a fixed-term contract. This is an entry-level opportunity to gain hands-on publishing experience, learn from award-winning designers, and contribute to real books that reach readers across Canada and beyond.

If you have a sixth sense for compelling book design, obsess over typography, thrive on feedback, and are eager to grow — this role could be your next chapter.

Your Contribution to the Story

Reporting to the Creative Director, you’ll collaborate with production and editorial teams to help design books for some of Canada’s most renowned authors. You will gain exposure to every stage of the publishing workflow — from concept to print — while receiving mentorship from senior designers.

What You’ll Do

• Prepare files and review/correct proofs with senior team support
• Format and upload titles (all formats) into a proprietary system
• Assist with scanning, reprints, second formats, and mark-up corrections
• Create information icons, maps, and design elements in Illustrator
• Assist with font and image research
• Potentially design covers and/or mechanicals (layout design) and see projects through production
• Communicate with production and editorial teams
• Attend design meetings and contribute to discussions

Experience & Knowledge You’ll Bring

• Degree or diploma in design, visual arts, or related field and/or print design experience
• Good understanding of prepress
• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat) on Mac
• Strong layout, typography, and attention to detail
• Excellent organization, communication, and follow-through skills
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Curiosity, flexibility, and eagerness to learn

Assets

• Experience with Procreate
• Illustration, photography, or hand lettering skills
• Interest in arts and crafts or other creative hobbies
• Bibliophile tendencies and a love of typography
• Cultural competency and ability to collaborate across diverse backgrounds
• Knowledge or lived experience related to marginalized communities
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively
• A genuine love for books

Our Commitment to Inclusion

We are actively seeking team members from communities with lived experiences of marginalization and underrepresentation. We strongly encourage applications from individuals who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, a person of colour, LGBTQIA2S+, or members of other marginalized groups.

We are committed to building a diverse team and culture of belonging where all voices are valued and respected.

Application Details

Please submit the following by Thursday, March 5, 2026:
• Resume
• Cover letter (PDF format)
• Portfolio samples (PDF or portfolio link)

Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.

This role requires residing within commuting distance of our Toronto office (minimum three days per week onsite).

We may use technology, including AI tools, to assist with reviewing applications. These tools support but do not replace human decision-making. Final hiring decisions are made by people.
