Position Summary
The Creative Director of Function of Beauty will redefine and deliver the end-to-end creative expression of the brand throughout the consumer journey, from discovery to evangelism. Reporting to the VP of Omnichannel Marketing, this leader is a master storyteller, with demonstrated ability to craft compelling narratives and translate them into high-impact creative that is both emotionally resonant and commercially effective.
This role owns how the brand shows up in the world, including look, feel, tone, and narrative across paid, owned, and earned media; digital and physical product; and in-store POP. You will lead the brand through a full relaunch, adapting creative to be fit-for-platform and fit-for-cohort while ensuring every touchpoint feels intentional, cohesive, and culturally alive.
This is an individual contributor role to start, operating as a team of one with support from agency and freelance partners. You will set the vision, execute against it, and shape the future team and partner model needed to scale. As a hands-on creative leader, you will move fluidly between strategy, concepting, and execution.
This role is for someone who thrives in a high-ownership, fast-paced environment, brings a strong consumer-first mindset and a distinct creative point of view, and is excited to build from a strong foundation rather than inherit a finished system.
This role is based in our NYC headquarters and requires in-office presence four days per week (Monday–Thursday).
Key Responsibilities
Brand Expression & Creative Direction
- Partner closely with Function’s branding agency to help shape and refine our evolving brand identity, ensuring it translates effectively across all consumer touchpoints with core consumer audiences.
- Lead the application and evolution of the brand system, including look, feel, tone, and narrative, ensuring a cohesive and differentiated presence in-market.
- Own the creative vision and execution of the brand relaunch, translating brand strategy into clear, compelling, and ownable creative across channels.
- Ensure all creative work reflects a consistent and elevated brand standard while remaining culturally relevant.
Omnichannel Creative Execution
- Oversee and contribute to creative across paid, owned, and earned media; DTC and retailer.com; in-store; product packaging; and experiential.
- Ensure all creative is fit-for-platform and fit-for-cohort, optimizing for how consumers engage across channels.
- Partner closely with Omnichannel Marketing and Sales teams to align creative with full-funnel objectives, from awareness through conversion and retention.
Concept Development & Production
- Concept, create, and direct high-impact campaigns, content, and brand assets that drive both brand building and business performance.
- Lead end-to-end creative development from ideation through execution, including briefing, feedback, and final delivery.
- Determine when to create internally versus leverage external partners to deliver against speed, quality, and scale needs.
Creative Operations & Scale
- Operate as a hands-on creative leader and individual contributor, owning both output and quality.
- Build and manage a network of agency and freelance partners to scale creative production effectively.
- Work with the VP of Omnichannel Marketing to define and evolve the future team structure and partner model to support long-term growth.
Performance, Testing & Optimization
- Partner with Marketing to ensure creative is informed by data, insights, agentic models, and testing frameworks.
- Build a test-and-learn approach to creative development, enabling rapid iteration and continuous improvement.
- Leverage emerging tools, including AI, to increase speed, efficiency, and creative output while maintaining quality.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Brand Transformation Experience: Proven track record of leading or playing a key role in a brand turnaround, relaunch, or rebrand, with the ability to translate strategy into in-market creative that shifts perception and drives growth.
- End-to-End Creative Leadership: Experience owning and executing creative across the full consumer journey, from awareness through evangelism, including community creation.
- Mass Consumer Expertise: Experience building brands in mass CPG or high-scale consumer businesses, with a strong understanding of how to create distinctive, effective creative within the constraints of US mass retail and performance-driven environments.
- Hands-On Creative Operator: Ability to concept, create, and direct work, not solely oversee teams or agencies. Comfortable working as an individual contributor and executing when needed.
- Omnichannel Fluency: Deep understanding of how creative must adapt across touch points while maintaining a cohesive brand system. Experience in a brand that used DTC as a channel of learning/community and retail as a scaled commerce channel is a plus.
- Creative System Builder: Experience building or evolving scalable creative systems that enable speed, consistency, and iteration across channels and partners. Someone who is excited by the potential of AI.
- Performance & Testing Mindset: Ability to partner with Labs to develop creative informed and optimized by data and insights, balancing brand with measurable commercial outcomes.
- Agency & Partner Management: Strong creative network and experience leading agencies and freelancers, with clear judgment on when to build internally vs. leverage external partners.
- Execution in Ambiguity: Comfortable operating in fast-paced, evolving environments with high ownership and limited infrastructure.
