With a growing global subscriber base and a reputation for insightful analysis and opinion on every aspect of world affairs,
The Economist is one of the most widely recognised and well-read current affairs publications and the foundation of our digital consumer product portfolio. We are developing a world-class product and design organisation and have an exciting opportunity for a Junior Product Designer based in London to help us design exceptional web and mobile app experiences that drive subscriber acquisition and retention.
The role
We are looking for a Junior Product Designer to join our e-commerce and subscriptions product area, with a focus on helping us improve acquisition and retention. You'll be part of teams that are helping to drive anonymous users to register, converting non-subscribers to paid subscribers, optimising checkout flows and encouraging self-serve account management.
You'll work in cross-functional teams of Engineers and Product Managers, with support from more Senior Product Designers. You'll produce end-to-end user experiences and create design deliverables ready for engineering. Your work will uphold
The Economist brand digitally, maintaining our high bar of visual quality whilst ensuring technical constraints are considered to create intuitive user flows.
You'll be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience across different parts of the design process; for instance sketching, creating prototypes and working through different levels of fidelity. From user research to wireframes and user flows through to testing and validation—you'll develop into a rounded product designer with coaching and guidance from more senior members of the design team.
You'll be supported by a friendly and inclusive design team who have the autonomy to define and improve processes and care deeply about developing each other's capabilities.
Responsibilities
- With the support of your team, you will work with key partners across the business (from product, editorial, marketing and data) to achieve shared goals
- Support in carrying out user research alongside your team to understand user behaviour and identify needs
- Translate insights into testable artefacts like sketches, user flows or interactive prototypes that utilise The Economist brand to test assumptions and ideas
- With the support of other designers, map out user flows and journeys into easy to understand formats that broadens the teams' understanding
- Create production ready design assets and work with engineers to ensure a high quality experience is shipped
- Actively participate in workshops and/or design sprints that bring stakeholders and others along the product development journey
- Regularly share work with your team and designers that communicate progress and design rationale
Who You Are
- You have a portfolio that demonstrates your design process and core craft skills (things like early concepts, sketches, wireframes and production ready designs) across different screen sizes
- You have an understanding of technologies used to build world-class digital product experiences. You have an understanding of the fundamentals of accessible design and have a keen eye for design quality, usability and consistency
- You have familiarity with prototyping and design tools like Miro and Figma. Experience in AI-enabled prototyping tools would be a plus
- You are a clear communicator either verbally or through text and are fluent in English.
- You seek opportunities to learn and grow your hard and soft skills through feedback and self reflection.
