What You Will Do

Stryker’s Principal User Experience (UX) Designer leads User Experience (UX) strategy and related design activities. Collaborating with engineering and marketing partners, this role is responsible for the definition and development of digital product platforms and systems. Proven Human Centered Design (HCD) skills are required to define and design appropriate UX, function, aesthetic, usable, and quality solutions.

The Principal User Experience Designer plays a central role in planning and leading user observation research, synthesis, and prioritization of insights. With experience in techniques such as empathic interviewing, journey maps, user vignettes, information architecture, cognitive evaluation, wireframes and interaction patterns, successful candidates will bring a variety of approaches to the product development process. The Principal User Experience Designer is responsible for delivering compelling user centered systems solutions that deliver meaningful value to our customers. Merging an understanding of user and business needs, successful candidates should have the technical and management skills to lead the definition and development of UX solutions. Our strongest candidates should be familiar with trends in user research, digital design and technologies while bringing a strategic approach to insight gathering and creative problem solving. Applicants should demonstrate proven design leadership and mentorship skills.

  • Collaborate within NPD teams to define and plan user research and discovery activities both in-person and virtually.
  • Plan and facilitate the research of user workflows and system interactions.
  • Lead cross functional project teams through research gathering, synthesis and analysis for the purpose of creating design inputs and setting the direction for early concept development.
  • Organize and lead workshops with internal and external teams to evaluate design concepts throughout the research process.
  • Contribute to sales and marketing strategy with industry knowledge and generating innovative user insights across product ecosystems.
  • Identify and define potential new product and service solutions that address clinical procedures and clinician workflow.
  • Collaborate with financial/business teams to create and evaluate design feature trade-offs that accomplish business case models.
  • Lead UX research and design strategy related to projects and business showcasing knowledge of the industry’s latest trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • Lead and coach teams in application of critical thinking and decision-making frameworks to solve complex business problems.
  • Contribute to design and trademark strategies based on global portfolios.
  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure implementation of user experience strategy through production release.
  • Collaborate with leadership to identify new opportunities that improve our methods, tools, processes, and strategies.
  • Lead strategic future product road mapping with business and NPD teams.
  • Coordinate and manage external research and design firms as required.
  • Responsible for evolving our user centered culture throughout the design community.

What You Need (Required)

  • Bachelor’s degree in User Experience (UX) Design, User Interface (UI) Design, Industrial Design, Interaction Design or related discipline.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience as a UX or Interaction Researcher and Designer including 3yrs of experience leading teams and projects.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates your work on commercialized products.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in Adobe CS is a must.
  • Competent with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability in verbal and visual communication of research, conceptual ideas, and design rationale; all within a user-centered design process.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaborating with marketing teams, software engineers and other development team members.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
